Turkish government’s collection of intelligence from co-ed dorms probably a great use of resources

Recent revelations that his government is receiving “intelligence” on what is going on in co-ed university dormitories indicate that Turkey’s prime minister has stepped up efforts to convince citizens that he has officially gone off the deep end.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has finally gone ahead and come out against the country’s most dangerous enemy: mixed-sex dormitories, where “all kinds of messy things are happening,” he explains, and so are “incompatible with [Turkey’s] conservative democrat nature.” Mr. Erdogan went on to explain that his security forces “receive intelligence on what goes on in these houses.” In case it’s not clear to the reader, Turkish intelligence officials are watching closely as students have  ridiculous amounts of dirty, hot sex. A lot of it. In dorms. Mr. Erdogan then promptly ordered the country’s governors to monitor student residences and crack down on this steamy, mildly-arousing-to-your-correspondent behavior.

Previous state enemies in Mr. Erdogan’s conservative democratic world have included adultery (which he sought to criminalize in 2004) and alcohol (the sale and distribution of which has been significantly tightened), and, of course, public parks (protests in May 2013 prevented the destruction of one of Istanbul’s last green spaces). Not included in the list of state enemies: unwieldy rebels in Syria, to whom he is providing training and facilitating the delivery of weapons.
